Toshiba Memory, Marvell Awarded ‘Best of Show’ for NVMe-oF TCP Solution at Flash Memory Summit 2018

Toshiba’s KumoScale Storage Software with Marvell’s FastLinQ 100GbE NICs Named “Most Innovative Memory Technology - Storage Networking”

SANTA CLARA, Calif., August 8, 2018 – Toshiba Memory America, Inc., the U.S.-based subsidiary of Toshiba Memory Corporation, today announced that its technology collaboration with Marvell Technology Group Ltd. for an NVMe-oF™1 (NVM Express™ over Fabrics)  over TCP Disaggregated Cloud solution has received a Flash Memory Summit ‘Best of Show’ award in the Storage Networking category. Toshiba Memory’s KumoScale™2 shared accelerated storage software has successfully tested NVMe-oF TCP acceleration with Marvell’s FastLinQ®3 100GbE NICs. This enables NVMe-oF to be deployed over existing Ethernet networks and opens the door for the broader deployment of NVMe-oF.

“The next generation of storage architectures will make NVMe over Fabrics cost-effective, flexible and agile to address the mainstream needs of on-premise data centers and the cloud,” said Jay Kramer, chairman of the awards program and president of Network Storage Advisors Inc. “We are proud to recognize Toshiba Memory and Marvell for their NVMe-oF over TCP solution that leverages existing, standard Ethernet networks for investment protection along with KumoScale software, enabling disaggregated and virtualized storage for any NVMe™ SSD.”

Toshiba Memory’s KumoScale shared accelerated storage software enables the use of NVMe-oF to make flash storage accessible over a data center network. KumoScale provides a simple, flexible abstraction of physical disks into a pool of block storage, all while preserving the high performance and low latency of direct-attached NVMe SSDs. By delivering disaggregated, highly-flexible network block storage to NVMe-oF compute nodes using standard TCP transport protocols, KumoScale allows data center applications to run more efficiently. Latency improvements over other fabrics, including FCoE and iSCSI, are also realized – on existing networks.

According to Oded Ilan, general manager of Toshiba’s Israel Storage Design Center, “We are working hard to enable cloud data centers to maximize flash resources and to accelerate the adoption of disaggregated flash by adding NVMe over TCP capability to KumoScale.  It is extremely gratifying to have our efforts recognized by the Flash Memory Summit ‘Best of Show’ award judging panel. By collaborating with Marvell, Toshiba Memory makes disaggregated storage in the cloud – with the agility and efficiency it brings – a reality.”

“At Marvell, we are on a mission to simplify and accelerate access to shared pools of NVMe storage by delivering a wide choice of fabrics,” said Christopher Moezzi, vice president of marketing, Server Connectivity Business Unit at Marvell. “We are extremely honored to be bestowed with a ‘Best of Show’ award at Flash Memory Summit 2018 for innovations jointly owned with Toshiba Memory. NVMe-oF TCP enables customer investments in flash to scale over existing networks using Marvell’s FastLinQ Ethernet solutions.”
